History

The Story Behind The Walls
127 East Gordon is a grand mid-19th-century mansion in Savannah’s Historic District. Distinguished by its architectural pedigree and enduring charm, it has evolved through generations of reinvention. The property has witnessed more than a century of the city’s unfolding story — from its earliest residents to its quiet years of decline. Under its current ownership, its restoration is part of a larger continual effort to preserve Savannah’s architectural soul.
1856–1869 | Original Construction
Built as a grand urban residence overlooking Calhoun Square. Exemplifies mid-19th-century Savannah architecture, with hall-parlor layout and refined masonry façade.
Pre-1916 | Wooden Side Porch Added
Early expansion reflecting period lifestyle and climate adaptation. Provided shaded outdoor living space.
1937–1954 | Porch Enclosed in Masonry / Three-Story Addition
The side porch enclosed and extended upward, transforming the form into an “I-house” configuration and adding interior square footage. This later addition was historically contributing in its own right. However, the addition was poorly constructed and did not have the proper foundation to support its weight, causing it later to shift and pull away from the initial structure.
1960 | Period of Significance Closes
Both the original 19th-century structure and 20th-century addition officially recognized as contributing elements within the Savannah Historic District.
1960–2022 | Gradual Decline
During this period, the property was converted to apartments. A small shop was housed within the front ground level. And there was a continued decline due to poor maintenance of the home.
2022 | Property Sale
Acquired by new ownership with the goal of full restoration and preservation. Marks the start of its 21st-century revival.
2023–Present | Restoration Underway
Comprehensive renovation honoring original craftsmanship — including façade repair, window restoration, and historically accurate masonry and stucco work.
Progress Gallery
Progress photos will be posted regularly to showcase each phase of the restoration.
